The Portuguese Textile and Clothing Industry is made up of approximately 6,000 companies and 5,900 individual companies, which employ a total of 138 000 direct workers, produce 7.5 billion euros and generate a turnover of 7.6 billion euros, of which 5.3 billion euros is the result of export activity.
It is one of the most important sectors of the national economy, accounting for around 10% of national exports, 19% of manufacturing employment and 8% of manufacturing turnover.
It is one of the few sectors of activity with a positive balance of trade in goods, often with a balance exceeding one billion euros.
The Portuguese Textile and Apparel Industry is mainly located in the North of Portugal, with 87% of the sector's turnover and 85% of employment, followed by the Central Region (11% of turnover and 12% of employment) .
